Title: Functional Webs for Freeform Architecture

This talk is an extended version of a prevoius talk in SGP 2011. We investigate functional webs, which are three families of curves with regular connectivity, where the curves have certain special properties. We will focus on planar, circular and geodesic properties. Each of these properties is motivated by manufacturability considerations and imposes constraints on the shape of the surface represented by the functional web. We will first show how a functional web consisting of only planar curves can be constructed using three families of planes. Then we will present an optimization approach to compute a functional web for rationalization or form-finding, which are important for freeform archiecture. Finally we will show our current research effort to explore the shape space of functional webs, which will contribute to fabrication-aware design.
