Interactive & Material-aware Design

Summary

In freeform architectural design, in order to realize complex freeform shapes in a cost-effective way, it is usually necessary to approximate a given freeform design using elements of simple shapes, such as planar panels. Shape representations using such elements induce geometric constraints for the designed shapes. Form-finding and rationalization of an architectural free-form structure corresponds to exploration of a high-dimensional space that are defined by these constraints as well as aesthetics requirements. This project develops interactive shape design tools that enable efficient exploration of feasible shapes according to a given set of requirements. The shape exploration is often formulated as a constrained optimization problem that takes fabrication-oritented constraints and aesthetics requirements into account. To achieve interative performance, we develop numerical optimization solvers that can produce results in real time. The solver codes are released in ShapeOp, an open-source C++ library developed by LGG in collaboration with Daniel Piker and Anders Holden Deleuran.
